Is Obama and Gen. Clarke playing "good cop" and "bad cop" against McCain?

Isn't this one-two punch becoming a familiar part of the Obama campaign. The slime attack is lauched by some Obama surrogate and then Obama gently denounces such slurs and slanders on the next day. Is that the game plan from the Obama strategists? Plan or coincidence?
